SMS to Email?
I’m looking for a service that will give me a US phone number capable of accepting SMS messages, and forwarding those messages to an email account. I’m happy to pay for the service, but my searches have come up blank. I don’t want a service where the user has to add the destination email manually. Any advice from readers?
Just a thought:
I know that Skype can send and recieve SMS. And you may or may not be able to find/create a gateway that forwards to email 🙂
I don’t know of any such service, but why not just have the sender address the SMS directly to the email address? Why make it go through the phone system and get charged for it? Just curious, because I’m working on an SMS/email gateway and haven’t seen any demand for this specific function.
Dan,
The sender in this case is designed for use on SMS, but I don’t like their privacy policy. So if I can make it work through email, I can create new, private addresses, and then run it through a filter on my computer. Or if I can get an SMS that’s not a voice number as well, then I’d be willing to share that with the operators of the service.
Adam,
I’m working on a (free) system that creates email aliases for cell phone numbers, allowing people to send/receive SMS messages without giving out their phone number. Might solve your problem – if you’re interested, drop me an email and I’ll let you know when it’s ready. Probably won’t start beta testing until after Black Hat / DefCon, i.e., mid-August.
Dan – I’d be interested in seeing that. It might solve my problem with verizon being totally incapable of sending SMS to most places outside of North America.
