NSA Spying on Americans Without Warrants
“Bush Secretly Lifted Some Limits on Spying in U.S. After 9/11, Officials Say.” A 10 page story in the New York Times opens:
Months after the Sept. 11 attacks, President Bush secretly authorized the National Security Agency to eavesdrop on Americans and others inside the United States to search for evidence of terrorist activity without the court-approved warrants ordinarily required for domestic spying, according to government officials.
Wow. I wonder how long it will be before this story goes down the memory hole, like all the others.
Other than kidnapping suspected terrorists on friendly countries’ soil, kidnapping suspected terrorists (US citizens included) on our own soil, torturing prisoners, offshoring the torture to Egypt or Jordan, running networks of secret prisons all over the world, and spying on US citizens via the Treasury department, FBI, DHS, and NSA, we’ve done a very good job balancing national security and civil liberties.
