Choicepoint Roundup, March 12

  • Ryan Singel has interesting analysis of the FTC’s Congressional testimony.
  • Ellen Simon of the AP has a story about her Choicepoint and Lexis Nexis files. Hint: They’re imperfect, but that won’t stop them from screwing up your life. Others (nothing to see here, Scott C Smith) touch on the same theme.
  • The Daily Caveat points to a new paper by George Washington University professor Daniel Solove, “A Model Regime of Privacy Protection.” Sounds like a fine idea. (Actually, I suspect that he’s done a better job than me, but I didn’t find his paper while mulling over that post.)
  • The AJC reports on ID theft insurance, and how it doesn’t really help with the feelings of violation, the abrogation of responsibility by the aggregators, or the very real ways in which the victims of these crimes have no control over their lives anymore.
  • Michael Adrian comments on new laws as far away as Ontario. (For the non-Canadians in the audience, a private member bill is one proposed by a member of Parliament without the support of their party. The bill is on its first reading, out of 4 or 5 hurdles.) Other laws have been proposed fairly widely across the US.
  • Finally, today’s Two Minutes Hate comes to you from You Will Anyway.

My obsessive Choicepoint coverage is rounded-up here.
